Streptococcus mutans grows in the moist and sugary atmosphere of your mouth after food in a biofilm that coats your teeth. Biofilm generates plaque, attacks enamel, and causes cavities. Research has found DIM disrupted Streptococcus mutans biofilm by 90% and therefore the bacterium was not given a chance to grow,  “The molecule, which was found to have low toxicity, could be added to toothpastes and mouthwashes to greatly improve dental hygiene,” says lead author Prof. Ariel Kushmaro of the Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering. He is also a member of the Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology and the Goldman Sonnenfeldt School of Sustainability and Climate Change.

When you eat cruciferous vegetables, your stomach acid breaks down a compound called indole-3-carbinol to produce a new compound called DIM. Research suggests that DIM affects estrogen levels in your body.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5059820/

Dosage

  • For extemporaneous use only
  • Common dosage range: 100mg - 300 mg daily; can be taken with or without food
  • It is advisable to begin supplementation at the low end of the dose range, increasing if required

Warnings

  • Doses over 300mg may be associated with headaches and gastrointestinal complaints
  • Some people get discoloured urine with DIM. If that happens try stopping it then restart it to check it was the DIM and ideally get a urine test done by the GP to ensure it's not something else like blood in the urine. If the DIM is causing the discolouration and the GP tests were normal, then it's fine to continue, but you could cut the dose back.
  • DIM has not been extensively tested for its effects during pregnancy
  • Because of its potential effect on hormones, health practitioners may prefer to avoid its use during pregnancy or lactation, unless confident that its impact can be reasonably deemed to be safe and beneficial
  • Dietary supplements should not replace a balanced diet
