What are its limitations?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis Whole Body MRI does not replace targeted screening like mammograms, colonoscopies, or blood-based diagnostics. It cannot detect all functional or metabolic issues and is best used as a complement to other preventative health tools.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is important to understand that this is a general wellness and observation scan. You will get a report prepared by the radiologist and have a discussion with a doctor to go through the results.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003ePlease note:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e(1) Because MRI might not be the right modality for a particular area, and a CT might better suited we don't scan everything. We are avoiding the CT due to unnecessary radiation exposure.\u003cbr\u003e(2) To scan certain areas effectively, it may require contrast, and we are trying to avoid anything invasive as this is a general wellness screening scan. So, we don't use contrast dyes to avoid any unnecessary risk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003eThere are 5 areas that will not be scanned:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLungs – because CT scan is preferred due to high-resolution images that help detect small abnormalities. That being said - when they look at the chest cavity, if there are any visible signs of any pulmonary masses or nodules, the radiologist will make a note and advise next steps in your report.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHeart – a full heart MRI alone involves gadolinium contrast, takes approximately 60 minutes, and people struggle to stay still for that long, making it challenging to get good images. There are better imaging tools for heart health. The Full Body MRI scan will still look at your heart quickly, and review the atrial size to check they are normal and check to see if there are any signs of thoracic aorta aneurysm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBreasts – a mammogram is the gold standard screening tool and is available under Medicare, even if someone opts for MRI it normally requires a targeted MRI\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBowel – a colonoscopy is the gold standard as they need to visually see the bowels, remove polyps and test to make sure it is not cancerous. When we scan the abdomen and pelvis if there are any visible bowel obstructions the radiologist will make a note. We just can't look inside the bowel using an MRI.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe prostate - PSA blood test is the gold standard. A screener MRI only looks at the prostate from 2-3 axis, and a specialised prostate MRI at the prostate from about 5-6 axis.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003eCommon abnormal findings\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne thing to be aware of with whole body MRI is that, in addition to potentially detecting something serious like cancer, it can also pick up things that may never cause problems. We call these things \"common abnormal findings\" and the radiologist will include them in the report. These may not cause symptoms and can be completely harmless - but to determine if they are serious or harmless it may require further investigation or biopsy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is essential to note that whole-body MRI may not be as sensitive or specific as other imaging modalities for certain types of cancer, such as early-stage lung and pancreatic cancers. Additionally, it may not provide as much detail as specialised scans like mammography for breast cancer or colonoscopy for colorectal cancer. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSimilarly, whole-body MRI will not be able to detect skin lesions, and therefore does not replace the need for regular skin cancer checks.
